Standard 7: Building Professional Capacity

"Candidates who successfully complete a building-level educational leadership preparation program understand and demonstrate the capacity to promote the current and future success and well-being of each student and adult by adapting and applying the knowledge, skills, and commitments necessary to build the school's professional capacity, engage staff in the development of a transformational collaborative professional culture, and improve systems of staff supervision, evaluation, support, and professional learning" (NPBEA, 2018)

Artifact 1 below description:

I attended a district briefing and reviewed communication regarding Salem-Keizer School District’s budget being identified as “at risk” due to statewide funding shortfalls, rising operational costs, and projected deficits. I examined district documents outlining potential impacts on staffing, programs, class sizes, and support positions. I also discussed the situation with my mentor administrator to better understand how the budget risk affects high school operations, staffing allocation, instructional supports, and professional development planning. This process required me to connect fiscal realities to leadership responsibilities, decision-making, and the systems that support staff and students.

Artifact 1:

As I continue developing my leadership skills in alignment with NELP Standard 7, I plan to regularly attend or view Salem-Keizer School District budget and board meetings to deepen my understanding of how financial decisions shape staffing, resources, professional development, and program sustainability at the high school level. Engaging with these meetings will allow me to learn how district leaders prioritize needs, interpret fiscal data, and respond to budget risks, knowledge that is essential for a future administrator responsible for supporting staff and maintaining strong instructional systems. By observing these processes , I will build the capacity to make informed decisions, communicate transparently with staff, and plan strategically during times of financial uncertainty. Artifact 3, my planning guide for district budget meetings, serves as an organizational tool to help me prepare questions, track fiscal priorities, and reflect on how each decision impacts professional learning and staff support. This process strengthens my ability to lead responsibly, advocate for resources, and contribute to a collaborative, knowledgeable professional

Artifact 6

This artifact is a slideshow I created and delivered during an optional professional development session focused on strengthening relationships with our instructional assistants and building a deeper understanding of the support they need to be successful in their roles. As part of NELP Standard 7, which emphasizes building professional capacity, cultivating collaborative learning environments, and supporting the growth of all staff, this PD reflects my commitment to ensuring that every adult in our building feels seen, valued, and equipped to contribute meaningfully to student learning. The slideshow guided staff through intentional strategies for getting to know our instructional assistants—their backgrounds, strengths, responsibilities, and perspectives—so that certified teachers and administrators can partner with them more effectively. I included prompts for reflective conversations, opportunities to share experiences, and practical structures for collaboration, communication, and clarity of roles. By centering the PD on the human relationships and professional respect that instructional assistants deserve, I aimed to elevate their essential contributions to student success and to model a leadership approach rooted in listening, partnership, and collective efficacy. This artifact demonstrates my ability to design and deliver meaningful learning experiences for staff, build trust within teams, and prioritize adult learning that ultimately strengthens the entire school community.
